They're Not All Gonna Be Winners 4/365

Sysco In The House I'm keeping this short. VERY short. I have COVID and feel like crap, and look, there isn't anything to really say about this piece of shit salad. This was made for me at the Cafe at The College of Saint Rose, where I work, which is run by Sysco, and it shows. It is a typical example of Sysco, but it was all I could manage given my schedule that day. It's in a plastic clamshell... The chicken was bland, the veggies old... and the dressing poured out of a jug. It's just utterly uninspired. There were things that could have made it slightly better - like blue cheese crumbles, and certain nuts, but they were out of those things.  On the very best of days, I'm disinclined towards giving Sysco any kind of positive reviews - with the exception of a certain Thai Coconut Soup they used to make at Southern Vermont College - but in this case, I kind of get it. The College of Saint Rose has announced that it will close at the end of this semester, and as suc

A House Salad and The National Dish of Brazil

A House Salad and The National Dish of Brazil Still on the road.  I will be in hotels many days each week for the remainder of the semester. I work as a professor of management at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, however the college has announced that it will be closing following the completion of this Spring semester.  It's shocking, I know, but sadly this is not my first time down this road. I was a professor at Southern Vermont College when it closed in 2019. I was a student at Bennington College in the early 1990's when a third of the faculty were unceremoniously terminated by the then President asserting financial issues. Odd how these people who place all the blame on the finances of these institutions are the self same people who are responsible for the finances, huh? I was a former student, employee, and resident of the town, of Marlboro College, and led the charge to save the school from closing in the Spring and Summer of 2020, only to watch the Preside

The Chef

Where The Hell Did You Learn to Cook?   I mean, who the hell is the "chef" behind the Chef Salad? It's an obvious abomination, and an affront to all things that any proper culinarian would hold sacred, so then, you know... "What gives, Dave?" Well look: I was on the road, and I needed to procure a salad to meet my obligations to my commitment to 365 Salads, so this is what I got. I considered something up from a gas station, but that was just too grim, and for Day 2 seemed like throwing in the towel before the race had even gotten started. This is a marathon after all, so I fired up the old Google machine and searched for the best salads in Albany, New York, where I currently am.  The top of the list is a place called La Fountain. Now, I'm guessing they pronounce that name with an American accent because it had the feel of a neighborhood bar, but it was really much more than that. The bartender was so kind, and we had a couple chuckles about the extra blue c

The Mighty Wedge

The Mighty Wedge I've been down this road before, and alas I did not make it very far, so I will try again.  A lot has happened since 2017, when I last attempted to eat 365 salads, including having all my teeth removed, and wandering the hinterlands as a toothless hillbilly, which will certainly impact how this second - really third - attempt to fill my gut with roughage. I think most importantly, I actually want to eat salads now. Why? Well, having to just gum your way through soft foods for three years, and sometimes subsist on protein shakes and broth following surgeries, will change a person's tastes.  There's more though. We've all been through a global pandemic where food availability was, at times, rather scary. That kind of thing will make a person think differently about the sustenance available at any given time.  I will keep this short though, as this is just the first of many entries to come, and given the nature of it all, why not start with the mighty We
